Die Sammlung zerkratzter Medaillen

Façade elements, decorative stones edging the flower beds in front of the entrances, footpaths of concrete slabs. They are familiar to me, even though I have never been here before. ›Die Sammlung zerkratzter Medaillen‹ (The Collection of Scratched Medals) is a subjective approach to the aesthetic force of East German modernism. The consistent design based on grids and the standardised inventory of the GDR’s new housing estates shaped these living environments. The places age and are overwritten – and yet their effect endures. The photographs centre on experiencing this architecture through a sense of space: a way into the emotional dimension of these places.
