Lux negativ

Electrification would hardly have been such a resounding success without the light bulb. Over the last generations, electricity has come to be associated with light and is deeply rooted in our imagination in this way. The spread of electricity inevitably led to the spread of light. Light pollution in cities and in the countryside adds to the list of humanity’s negative impacts.

For his photographs, Christoph Liepach sought out places without light that were nevertheless electrified. In almost complete darkness, the digital sensor of his camera captured individual pieces of light information that could only be guessed at while the picture was being taken. In his work ›Lux negativ‹ he has made this information visible to the human eye again. Like an archaeologist, he uncovered the digital image file layer by layer, reconstructing the colours and structures of places that he himself had not seen.
