In der Art eines Idylls

When people talk about the past and the places they come from, nostalgia is often an inevitable filter that guides the gaze. We reconstruct one possible version of the past. My photo series ›In der Art eines Idylls‹ (Something of an Idyll) plays with this reconstruction of moments through the ›nostalgic filter‹. We form our identity from experiences of our surroundings at an early stage of development. In this work I therefore return to that time and seek out places of collective childhood experience. I blend my origins in the prefabricated housing estate of my childhood with nostalgic moments and collective memories of GDR citizens and with the propagandistic imagery of the GDR. Memories passed on to me by the generations of my grandparents and parents mingle with my own experiences. In this way I create a setting, a backdrop for the formation of a possible identity.
